Warts and Verrucas

Warts are skin growths that are caused by a virus.

Common warts usually grow on your hands or fingers. Treatment helps prevent common warts from spreading to other parts of your body or to other people. However, common warts may recur after treatment, and they may be a persistent problem.

Verrucas are caused by the same skin virus but they normally affect the feet. They grow deeply into the skin and may be difficult to treat.

When to See a Doctor

  • If a wart looks infected after being irritated or knocked off;
  • If a plantar wart is painful when you walk;
  • If you have warts in the anal or genital area;
  • If the wart causes continual discomfort;
  • If a wart develops on the face and is a cosmetic concern.
