Irritable bowel syndrome is a common disorder that affects the colon.
The signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can vary widely from person to person. The most common symptoms include abdominal pain or cramping, a bloated feeling, gas (flatulence), alternating bouts between constipation and diarrhoea, and mucus in the stool. You are more likely to have IBS if you are young, female or have a family history of IBS. In many cases, simple changes in your diet and lifestyle can provide relief from IBS. Because symptoms of IBS can occur with other diseases, it is best to discuss these symptoms with your doctor.
A diagnosis of IBS depends largely on a complete medical history and physical exam. Some red flag signs and symptoms that might prompt your doctor to do additional testing include:
- New onset after age 50
- Weight loss
- Rectal bleeding
- Fever
- Nausea or recurrent vomiting
- Abdominal pain, especially if it’s not completely relieved by a bowel movement
- Diarrhea that is persistent or awakens you from sleep
