Measles

We understand that there are some concerns in the community about a possible measles outbreak. This could be because the Uzbek government is doing a vaccination campaign in all local schools.

Measles is an infection caused by a virus that mainly affects children, but can occur at any age. The illness is unpleasant, with high temperature and a rash but most children fully recover. However, some children develop serious complications such as Pneumonia, encephalitis, hepatitis and febrile convulsions.

Children should have the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccination before coming to Uzbekistan. One single vaccination gives you 95% protection against the virus. The second vaccine raises this protection up to 99%. We also recommend that adults born after 1957 be vaccinated. It is assumed that adults born before that date have acquired immunity against it.

Please check your children’s vaccination book. If they have had 2 injections there is no need to worry. If they had just one, bring them promptly to the Clinic so we can give them the second dose. If you are uncertain about the vaccination status, please come and speak to one of our doctors.
